| Why
Natural Stream Channel Design
Rivers and
streams are ever changing and evolving systems that are
dependant upon the surrounding land types and uses to reach
and maintain equilibrium. Rivers and streams are excellent
indicators of environmental stress.
When changes
such as increased development, poor storm-water runoff
management and reduction in riparian buffers occur within our
watersheds, stream systems are severely altered. These
alterations can cause streambank instability that leads to
increased sediment loading within the stream systems. If there
is too much sediment within a stream it can limit what types
of organisims and fish can inhabit the stream.
Natural
Stream Channel Design (NSCD) restoration mimics the natural
evolution process of streams and corrects the negative impacts
of watershed development on our streams. |

Benefits of Stream Restoration
Natural stream
channel design does not just focus on the stream channel, but
the whole stream system. Everything is connected, and with an
understanding of how these systems work together, restoration
using natural stream channel design techniques ensure that a
stream can continue to maintain equilibrium and function
properly.
Benefits of
using natural stream channel design:
Stable
Streambed and Bank
for the proper transportation of water and sediment
Creation
of Floodplains
for increased
water storage during flooding
Improved
Aquatic Habitat
for fish
and macroinvertebrates
Vegetated
Riparian Buffer
provides
stability for streambanks, creates food, habitat and travel
corridors for wildlife.
Improved
Water Quality
for present and future generations
Long
Lasting Results
in comparison to a “band-aid” approach
