Our laboratory processes benthic macroinvertebrate samples for the purpose of measuring the taxonomic composition and abundance of macroinvertebrates found in freshwater streams. Our scientists have processed over 3,500 benthic macroinvertebrate samples from streams in Pennsylvania and West Virginia between 2003 and 2008 and currently process over 1,000 samples per year. The majority of our samples are used to compile data for long term monitoring and permitting requirements of the mining and construction industries. Samples are collected using several different methodologies.
Samples are received at the WPI laboratory, cataloged, and sorted according to the appropriate methodology. Once sorted, all aquatic organisms are identified to the lowest taxonomic level, preferably genus, using the latest accepted taxonomic keys and high quality stereo microscopes. Our services are supported by a rigorous QA/QC program and NABS certified taxonomists.
Data is sent to the client in a timely manner in both digital and paper form in the format requested by the client. The samples are returned to the client after processing.
